For those of you who have never seen Antonio Sanchez play, take a look at this clip ! He is Pat Metheny's actual drummer.

The guy is AMAZING - he can take what "EL NEGRO" does to the next level. I'm talking about ODD TIME CLAVE'S FOR F*#^*S SAKE! Look out for:

PAT METHENY DVD - SPEAKING OF NOW, he has two solo spots, and plays AMAZING throughout.

MODERN DRUMMER FEST DVD 2003 - Sanchez at his best, up close and apperantly improvised since his Metheny backing tracks failed!

Also Pat just put out the new album last week, with Sanchez.

His credits on the records should have just listed: Paul Wertico - Ride Cymbals. I like Antonio much better with Pat, but I still think Erskine or Colaiuta would make me happiest! For that matter, bring back Gottlieb and have a reunion tour.

I'm with SDK on the wierd feeling grooves with Pat's newer material. Pat does everything to click, even live. It sounds like Antonio spends most of his trying to play with the click rather than just playing. But the bands best critically acclaimed work WAS with Wertico. His sound was perfect.
I do however prefer Danny to Wertico. But those guys will never play together again.

    Question

Believe it or not, I prefer the Pat Metheny Group with Paul Wertico. In my opinion his groove was much deeper and his parts very appropriate. I hear a lot of click chasing/adjusting in Sanchez's PMG groove, and breaking into a latin drum solo makes absolutely no sense in the PMG setting. I think he's much more capable on the drums than Wertico, but that's not the point of the instrument as far as I'm concerned. And this by no means a diss. He's a great player. It's just the way I feel about his musical approach and groove.
CL, I have never heard Sanchez play odd clave with the left foot while soloing. Where can I hear that? That clip above was nice, but cowbell on the quarter, and blowing in three/four barely compare to Negro. Is there odd meter clave blowing on that same DVD?

    Thumbs up

I dont dig the whole semi-billy cobham vibe, only playing with pencils for drum sticks, while leaving your left hand on cross stick for an hour and half thing very appealing.

Although he IS soloing under a clave.

    In my opinion, BFD.

No, I know. I was taking some editorial liberties.
